Senate Considers New Bill Addressing Muslim Brotherhood

In a significant move, US Senator Ted Cruz is set to introduce a bill to officially designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation. The Republican Senator from Texas has long campaigned for this, arguing that the Brotherhood poses a serious threat to US national security.

This bill takes a “bottom-up” approach. Instead of immediately labelling the entire Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group, it will first focus on specific branches that are directly involved in terrorism. This method aims to address concerns from critics who see the Brotherhood differently in various countries.

Other Republican Senators, including Tom Cotton, Rick Scott, and John Boozman, are supporting the bill. According to Cruz, the Muslim Brotherhood has been a key supporter of terrorist organisations like Hamas, which launched a deadly attack on Israel in October 2023. The bill highlights how the Brotherhood provides financial aid, training, and political support to its networks worldwide.

US lawmakers believe the group’s activities are destabilising US allies in the Middle East. They argue that officially blacklisting the Muslim Brotherhood would help cut off its funding channels and prevent further support to extremist groups.

Globally, countries like France are also increasing pressure on the Brotherhood. On July 7, French President Emmanuel Macron held an emergency security meeting to discuss new sanctions and ways to block the Brotherhood’s funding sources.

The move by the US signals growing international efforts to clamp down on the Muslim Brotherhood’s influence, which is seen by many governments as a serious challenge to global security.
