Russia Trying To Use Cold As “Weapon Of Mass Destruction”, Says Ukrainian President

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has said that Russia is trying to use the cold in the winter season as a “weapon of mass destruction” by striking energy infrastructure.

In a video message, Zelenskyy told French mayors that Russia wanted to transform the cold this winter into a weapon of mass destruction. He reportedly said, “To survive this winter and to prevent Russia from transforming the cold into an instrument of terror, we need a lot of things.”

The Ukrainian President also urged the Association of French Mayors to send generators and equipment to protect Ukraine’s emergency services and medics. He urged them to support Ukrainian “towns” and “communities’ against “terrorism.” The Ukrainian President has said that millions of people are currently without electricity and water as winter sets in and temperatures drop below freezing.

There is a water shortage in the recently de-occupied city of Kherson. Women, children and the elderly are vulnerable because of the winter season. On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that millions of people in Ukraine face a life-threatening winter this year because Russia continued to pound the country’s energy infrastructure.

WHO regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said, “This winter will be about survival. Half of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is either damaged or destroyed.” Kluge also revealed that around 10 million Ukrainians are currently without electricity. In recent weeks, Russia has targeted the energy infrastructure in Ukraine with missile strikes, leaving millions of homes across the country without electricity during the winter season.
