Five Most Dangerous Airports In The World
1. Tenzing-Hillary Airport In Nepal
In honour of the first two people to conquer the mighty Mount Everest, Nepal’s Lukla Airport was renamed to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in January 2008. The runway here is alarmingly short, with the airport having much less electricity and virtually no modern air traffic control features.
2. Courchevel Airport In France
This airport in France is located amidst mountains and majorly caters to the needs of people who want to ski in the Alps. On top of a really short runway, pilots also need to navigate the mountains and land the aircraft at sharp angles for it to slow down.
3. Toncontin International Airport In Honduras
This civil and military airport is located just 6 km from the centre of Tegucigalpa in Honduras. The short runway often causes planes to stop abruptly. Moreover, the pilot needs to make certain arrangements to avoid hitting the mountains while taking off or landing the aircraft.
4. Barra International Airport In Scotland
With a worryingly short runway, this uniquely dangerous airport is undoubtedly the only one in the world to also use the beach as its runway. Also called the Barra Eollgary Airport, it is located at the northernmost tip of the Barra island at the bay of Traigh Mhor.
5. Agatti Aerodrome In India
Located in Lakshadweep, on the southern end of Agatti Island, it is the only airport in the union territory serving 36 local Indian tourist islands. It’s just a short strip of land present in the serene blue waters, making it one of the world’s most dangerous airports.
