In an official release today, the BCCI stated that the suspension was agreed upon after extensive consultations with major stakeholders, franchise owners, broadcasters, sponsors, and even some representatives of the fans.
“The IPL Governing Council gave priority to the sentiments of players and the collective interest of all stakeholders in coming to this difficult decision,” the statement read.
The BCCI, meanwhile, showed solidarity with the Indian armed forces during this sensitive period: Full support for Operation Sindoor, the military response to recent terrorist activities, Acknowledgement of the “bravery, courage, and selfless service” of India’s military personnel, Commitment to stand firmly with the Nation and Government during this challenging time.
This suspension creates a new set of questions regarding the revised schedule of the tournament, which remains unknown. How or when the changes in the schedule will be worked out remains unclear. Likewise, no information is available regarding contingency plans in case the tension persists past the one-week period.
This is the very first time since COVID-19 that the IPL has encountered a mid-season halt, another testament to the seriousness of the present the geopolitical situation
