The White House criticized Amazon through press briefing statements on Tuesday after the company added Trump’s tariff expenses right next to product prices against White House policy guidelines.
White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt wanted to know from Amazon whether they started showing price transparency after the Biden administration took office during times of rising inflation. Leavitt says Americans should endorse domestic purchasing due to recent changes.
The public backlash against Amazon caused its share value to drop by more than 2% prior to market kickoff. The proposal from Amazon stipulated that taxes will be displayed within the Amazon Haul section yet they will not be shown in the main marketplace.
The political dispute started at a time when the Trump administration introduced extensive Chinese import tariffs which can reach up to 145% on some products. Industry analysts indicate that China provides the source for 70% of the products Amazon sells.
The move to display tariff charges began with other e-commerce platforms who already started incorporating them into their operations:
