what happened to olympic figure skater alexandra paul
On Tuesday, a truck crashed into several stationary vehicles in Ontario, killing prominent Canadian Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul on impact.
Her baby, who was in the vehicle with her at the time of the fatal collision, survived and received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries in hospital.
Describing Paul as a “shining star on and off the ice”, Skate Canada praised the 31-year-old for leaving an “indelible mark” on the world of figure skating.
Alongside her partner and husband, Mitchell Islam, Paul won a number of international medals before eventually announcing her retirement from competitive skating in 2016.
The athlete grabbed a medal at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in 2010 and four years later, represented her country at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games.
Remembering “Alexandra’s contributions to the sport” and reflecting on the “sportsmanship” she exemplified, Skate Canada announced the sudden demise of the prominent Olympian.
The organisation highlighted Paul’s accomplishments as a figure skater, besides describing her as “a true role model” for scores of aspiring athletes from the skating community.
Meanwhile, sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to remember the Canadian as “an accomplished young woman”.
