U.S. Strikes on Iran: What Americans Need to Know About Gas Prices and Travel Risks
If you’ve winced at the pump this year, you’ve already felt the fallout from the U.S. strikes on Iran. The next round of headlines could hit your wallet, or your vacation plans, even harder.
This Isn’t a “What If” Anymore
The conflict is well underway. President Trump announced “major combat operations” against Iran on Feb. 28, with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes. An April ceasefire didn’t last. By July, U.S. Central Command was launching strikes for a ninth consecutive night. Diplomacy is still alive, though barely. Qatari mediators delivered a draft agreement to Tehran, and Iran is expected to respond by the end of this week.
Why Oil Prices Won’t Settle Down
The Strait of Hormuz carries about a fifth of the world’s oil. Brent crude climbed past $115 a barrel on Wednesday. Interestingly, the oil hasn’t stopped flowing. Kpler data shows at least 10.1 million barrels a day still crossing the strait. Analysts say the real driver is fear. Insurance rates remain elevated, and markets are pricing in a return to full-scale fighting.
What It Means at the Pump
Before the war, the national average dipped to $2.98 a gallon on February 26. Since then, it has climbed past $4.50 at one point. The pain isn’t evenly shared. A New York Fed report found rising gas prices are hitting low-income households hardest. Higher fuel costs also tend to push up grocery bills, and with midterms days away, that’s become a political flashpoint.
Travel Risks: Know Before You Go
The State Department has been blunt. It told Americans in the Middle East to consider leaving, or be ready to leave if things escalate, and to expect cancellations and airspace closures. Even if you’re not headed to the region, it may affect you. Hubs like Doha and Dubai connect many flights to Europe and beyond. Iran is a Level 4 “do not travel” country, while Gulf nations like Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia sit at Level 3.
What You Can Do Right Now
- Flying abroad? Check your routing and airline alerts before you book.
- Already overseas? Enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates.
- Watching your budget? AAA suggests carpooling, combining errands and using a trusted app to find cheaper fuel.
