UAE’s Lifeline to Gaza: Desalination Pipeline & Critical Medical Evacuations

Amid Gaza’s mounting humanitarian crisis, marked by collapsing water infrastructure, dwindling clean water supplies, and a wave of illnesses, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched bold and strategic interventions.

Spearheaded under its ‘Gallant Knight 3’ mission, the UAE is building a standalone desalination pipeline from Egyptian Rafah to southern Gaza’s Al-Mawasi area, designed to supply 15 liters of potable water daily to over 600,000 people.

Complementing this effort, the UAE is coordinating medical evacuations for critically ill patients, children, cancer sufferers, and wounded individuals, transporting them safely to UAE hospitals for urgent care. These dual initiatives underscore the UAE’s multifaceted approach to humanitarian support, addressing both immediate survival needs and life-saving treatments in a context of increasing deprivation and peril.

Humanitarian Interventions by the UAE

1. UAE Launches Water Pipeline Project from Egypt to Gaza

  • The UAE has established multiple desalination plants in Rafah, Egypt, capable of generating over 1.2 to 1.6 million gallons per day, enough to serve approximately 600,000 Gazans.
  • A dedicated pipeline, independent of Israel’s water network, transports clean water to Al-Mawasi in southern Gaza via a roughly 900-meter conduit, enhancing water security in critical areas.
  • This infrastructure, part of the Gulf nation’s Gallant Knight 3 initiative, was completed in a matter of weeks and represents a rapid-scale intervention in humanitarian infrastructure.

2. UAE Conducts Urgent Medical Evacuations for Patients from Gaza

  • Following directives from President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has organized multiple evacuation flights, transporting critically ill patients, such as injured individuals, cancer patients, and children, from Gaza to UAE hospitals.
  • In one recent operation, 188 patients and their family members were evacuated with the support of the World Health Organization, landing safely and receiving immediate care.
  • These evacuations are part of a larger, long-term commitment to support up to 1,000 cancer patients and 1,000 children, underscoring the UAE’s extensive engagement in healthcare diplomacy during the crisis.

Why These Efforts Matter

  • Water Security: With Gaza averaging only 3–5 liters of water per person per day, well below the WHO emergency threshold of 15 liters, the UAE’s water initiative brings critical relief to hundreds of thousands who face dehydration and waterborne diseases.
  • Healthcare Intervention: At a moment when Gaza’s medical facilities are overwhelmed or incapacitated, evacuations offer life-saving treatment opportunities for those who otherwise might have no recourse.
  • Operational Independence: The desalination pipeline circumvents damaged or unavailable Israeli infrastructure, offering a direct and reliable source of clean water for Gaza’s southern communities.

The UAE’s dual strategy, building a robust desalination and distribution network while executing complex medical evacuations, highlights a comprehensive and urgent humanitarian vision for Gaza. By addressing water scarcity and healthcare access in tandem, the UAE is delivering sustained, lifesaving support amid one of the most severe crises of our time.
