Sudanese Islamist Commander Vows Troops for Iran: SAF’s Shocking Tehran Alliance Exposed

A top Sudanese Islamist commander, Al-Naji Abdullah, from the Islamic Movement and involved with SAF-aligned battalions, has publicly promised to send troops to Iran. “If America and Israel send ground forces into Iran, I swear to God we will support our brothers in Iran. We will send brigades into Iran and volunteer to fight,” he said in a video statement. This follows rising US-Israeli attacks on Iranian targets, suggesting Sudan might join a larger conflict in the Middle East.

Islamist Roots in Sudan’s Army

Sudan’s SAF has long supported Islamist groups from the time of ousted leader Omar al-Bashir. After the 2019 uprising, these groups, which are connected to the banned National Congress Party (NCP) and Islamic Movement, provided thousands of fighters, trained civilians, and created special units. Leaders such as Abdullah, who are involved in SAF-aligned battalions, mix military duties with jihadist language and reject democracy in favor of an Islamic state.

Iran’s Shadow Over SAF Operations

Iran has provided support to SAF during its civil war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Tehran supplies explosive drones that strengthen SAF airstrikes. Revolutionary Guard trainers have been seen with Islamist brigades such as al-Baraa bin Malik. This assistance revives connections from before 2019, despite Iran’s status as a sponsor of terrorism. SAF leaders focus on weapons instead of Western alliances.

Risks to Stability and Counter-Terror

Abdullah’s vow could pull Sudan into a larger conflict, strain ties with the US and Egypt, and invite retaliation. It suggests an expansion of proxies: SAF Islamists might send African fighters to Tehran, which would undermine peace and human rights in a war-torn country. Critics are calling for isolation of these groups to prevent a terror hub in the Red Sea. Why should we accept terror-aligned factions in Sudan’s army?
