The UAE directs to restructure the program to support low-income people

The president of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has directed the restructuring of the “Social Support Program for Low Income” into an integrated program to support low-income people.

The budget of the program has been raised from 14 billion dirhams to 28 billion dirhams. The budget of the annual social support allocation has been raised from 2.7 billion to 5 billion dirhams.

The leadership’s keenness is to provide decent livelihoods for the people of the country with limited incomes in all parts of the country. The directive of His Highness the President of the State is to provide this support to national families and citizens with limited income to enhance family stability. The decision has been taken in line with the community welfare and quality of life system, that the UAE is keen to lay its foundations and consolidate its components for its citizens.

The support program through the Ministry of Community Development in the UAE under the directives of the President of the State covers various basic axes for families with limited income.

How will the people benefit from this program?

The support program will provide allowance to the head of the family, wife, and children. The head of the family in the age group of 21-30 years will receive an amount of 5000 dirhams per month, and the head of the family in the age group from 30-40 years will receive 7000 dirhams per month, and the age group from 40-50 years will be given 9,000 dirhams. The new “social support program” includes raising the wife’s allowance to 3,500 dirhams.

The parents will receive 2,400 dirhams per month for the first son, 1,600 dirhams per month for the second and third sons, and 800 dirhams for the fourth son or more.

It will provide financial support for housing, and basic needs such as food, water, electricity, and fuel. It will also provide temporary financial support to unemployed citizens.

The UAE government will bear 75% of food price inflation as part of this initiative. It provides a 50% monthly subsidy for electricity consumption of fewer than 4000 kilowatts. It also provides a 50% monthly subsidy for water consumption of fewer than 26,000 gallons.

The UAE government also offers subsidies for fuel. The program provides a monthly subsidy of 85% of the increase in the price of fuel for more than 2.1 dirhams per litre. The married head of the family receives a monthly subsidy of 300 litres, and the working wife receives a subsidy of an additional 200 litres. The head of the family receives a subsidy of 400 litres if the wife does not have support.

How many allowances does the support program create?

The support program created 4 new allowances:

  • The housing allowance
  • The university education allowance
  • The allowance for unemployed citizens over the age of 45
  • The allowance for the unemployed person looking for work; a fixed subsidy is granted starting from 2000 to 5000 dirhams per month according to the age of unemployed citizens.

The support program includes a housing allowance ranging between 1500 dirhams per month, and 2500 dirhams per month in the case of independent housing until the family obtains government housing.

For outstanding students, the amount of the allowance is 3200 dirhams per month. The UAE is keen to enrol its children in university education.
