Thanksgiving and Christmas Travel 2026: Why Are US Flight Tickets Becoming More Expensive?
You open your airline app, type in the route you’ve flown home for years, and the price makes you blink. If that happened to you this fall, you’re not imagining it. Thanksgiving and Christmas travel 2026 is costing real money.
How Much Have Holiday Flight Prices Jumped?
Hopper’s data shows Thanksgiving flights averaging $402, up 31% from last year, while Christmas flights average $452, up 23%. Hopper’s analysis calls this the priciest holiday travel season in a decade.
CNN’s numbers, using a slightly different comparison, look even steeper. Thanksgiving airfare was up nearly 40% from this time last year, and Christmas-period tickets were up more than 20%.
What’s Pushing Airfares Up?
Pricey jet fuel
Hopper says prolonged high jet fuel costs, largely tied to the conflict in the Middle East, have pushed domestic round-trip fares up significantly. Fuel is one of an airline’s biggest expenses, and passengers end up covering it.
Fewer flights and more fees
Airlines have trimmed some less profitable flights while raising fares and baggage fees to recover losses. Fewer seats on the market means higher prices on the ones left.
Demand that won’t back down
Here’s the catch for travelers: bookings have stayed steady even as prices climbed. When people keep buying, airlines have little reason to cut.
Is Relief Coming?
Probably not. Airline executives have told the public not to expect lower prices this season, and said fares could rise further.
Why It Matters for Families
For a family of four, a $400-plus ticket each way adds up fast, before you count bags, a rental car or a hotel. Christmas hotel rates are up 18% to $197 a night, though Thanksgiving rates are holding at $170.
My read: many travelers will shorten their trips, drive where they can, or choose a single holiday instead of both. Airlines and hotels will likely still fill up, which is why prices aren’t budging.
How to Pay Less Right Now
Hopper’s advice was to book before Halloween, and that window has closed. Booking sooner still beats booking later. A few other moves help:
- Skip the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Fares that day spike above $600. Black Friday, Cyber Monday or Thanksgiving Day itself are cheaper.
- Leave early for Christmas. Departing the Monday or Tuesday before the holiday gets the lowest rates.
