Halloween 2026: How Much Are Americans Spending on Costumes and Candy?

by Anamika October 24, 2026

Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, and American shoppers are getting ready for one of the busiest weekends of the season. The National Retail Federation expects total Halloween spending to reach $13.5 billion, up from $13.1 billion last year. Costumes, candy and decorations account for most of it. At the same time, many families say they are watching prices more carefully than before.

Costumes Lead the Halloween Shopping List

Costumes are the biggest category this year at $4.4 billion, and 71% of Halloween shoppers plan to buy at least one. Adults will spend about $2 billion on their outfits, while children’s costumes bring in $1.5 billion. Pets join the fun too, with $920 million set aside for tiny pumpkin and hot dog outfits.

Kids still lean toward superheroes, princesses, witches and ghosts. Adults often pick witches, vampires and Batman. Shopping starts early, with about half of people browsing by September. Discount stores are the top stop at 39%, ahead of specialty costume shops at 32% and online stores at 27%.

Candy Costs More, and Shoppers Are Adjusting

Candy remains the most popular purchase, with 96% of shoppers planning to buy some, adding up to $4.1 billion in sales. Price is the problem. A 100-piece bag of candy now averages $16.96, compared with $16.39 in 2025 and only $9.91 in 2021. Bankrate economists estimate that today’s candy budget buys roughly 40% less candy by weight than it did in 2020.

Because of this, some retailers are offering coupons and short price cuts, and about a third of shoppers plan to reuse items they already own. Decorations follow close behind costumes at $4.3 billion, and greeting cards add another $800 million.

The average person expects to spend $115.14 overall, almost level with last year’s $114.45. Handing out candy is still the most common activity at 61%, followed by wearing a costume at 50%. For many households, the goal is simple: enjoy the night without overspending.
