The big T20 World Cup cricket tournament is happening in 2024. Teams from all over the world are coming to play in the West Indies and the United States. Before the World Cup matches of the tournaments begin, there will be warm-up matches to help teams get ready.
The 9th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be the biggest ever, featuring a record 20 teams. The teams are divided into four groups of five teams each. In the first stage, each team will play four matches against the other teams in their group.
The top two teams from each group will then advance to the Super 8s stage. The remaining eight teams will be split into two more groups, where they will play three matches against each other. The top two teams from each Super 8s group will then progress to the semi-finals.
The winners of the semi-finals will clash in the grand final on June 29 in Barbados to determine the T20 World Cup champion.
The tournament will be co-hosted by the USA and West Indies. A total of nine venues will be used, with three in the USA (Lauderhill, Dallas, and New York) and six in the Caribbean (across six different nations).
The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match is scheduled for June 9 at the new Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in Long Island, New York.
The 20 teams have been divided into four groups as follows:
Group A: India, Pakistan, USA, Ireland, Canada
Group B: England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman
Group C: West Indies, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea
Group D: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal
Most teams have already announced their preliminary squads for the T20 World Cup. Teams are allowed to make unlimited changes to their 15-player squads until May 25. Any changes after that date will require approval from the ICC’s Event Technical Committee.
The tournament will kick off on June 1, with the USA taking on Canada in Dallas. The league stage will continue until June 17, with the Super 8s stage starting on June 19. The semi-finals are scheduled for June 26 (Trinidad and Tobago) and June 27 (Guyana), with the final taking place on June 29 in Barbados.
In case of a tie in any match, a Super Over will be played to determine the winner. If the Super Over also ends in a tie, subsequent Super Overs will be played until a winner emerges.
For the knockout matches (semi-finals and final), additional time has been allocated to ensure the completion of the matches. A total of 250 minutes of additional time is available for both semi-finals, while the final has a reserve day on June 30.
A total of 17 teams will participate in warm-up fixtures between May 27 and June 1. These matches will be 20 overs per side and will not have T20I status, allowing teams to field all members of their 15-player squads.
The warm-up matches will take place in various venues across the USA and West Indies, including Grand Prairie (Texas), Trinidad and Tobago, Florida, and Queen’s Park Oval (Trinidad and Tobago).
With the record number of teams, exciting format, and co-hosting by the USA and West Indies, the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup promises to be a thrilling and memorable event for cricket fans around the world.
