Struggling Orioles Add Bullpen Arm, Acquire Luis F. Castillo from Mariners
Having only won 13 games and lost 22 out of the 35 played this 2025 MLB season, the Baltimore Orioles need a comeback. In a small signing, the Orioles improve their bullpen by obtaining Castillo and a right-arm pitcher of the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash. The team made the announcement on Wednesday, which is yet another move by the Baltimore front office to try and strengthen the team as it has the worst record in the league thus far. Castillo had a bad season so far but the team might get better results if he can get a fresh start and tweak his mechanics to get better in the second half of the season. The Orioles also had little choice but to announce the trade for Luis F. Castillo with Wednesday morning. The deal cost them only cash, which means it was a very cheap acquisition for a team that could use all the bullpen help it can get. He has been placed on the option to the Tides in which he will spend some time in the organization. Castillo’s performance with the Mariners in the year 2025 is not impressive. During his 7.0 innings at the pitcher’s mound, he left so much to be desired with a 7.71 earned run average. He was expendable in Seattle, even more so after the team signed outfielder Leody Taveras from the Texas Rangers in a deal. So that they could clear the roster space for Castillo, the Orioles issued a Letter of tender to left-handed pitcher Walter Pennington, officially releasing him from their team. This comes latest among a number of other recent changes attuned by Baltimore’s front office in a bid to stabilize the team. While the impact of this trade is unlikely to be felt in terms of contributions to the field this year or even next year, it is clear that GM Mike Elias and his crew are not yet done wheeling and dealing. It’s up to the Orioles to believe in Castillo’s promise and to think the change of environment and some minor changes in his approach will eventually make the difference. While the trade may not be one that gets the fans very excited, it is at least encouraging to see that the front office is trying to find solutions. In this case, even small changes possessed a significant role for a team that is in the AL East division at the end of the table.Trade Details
