Life In Kamchatka After Over Two Meters Of Snowfall Hits The Region

Russian peninsula of Kamchatka is now struggling with the weather event that has in history been referred to as a snow apocalypse by locals. The capital city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is buried in a tenacious snow weave of more than two meters in hardly five days of constant cyclones. The congestion is great to the extent that the residents have been compelled to excavate tunnels through the doors of their apartments just to access the street. The sheer amount of precipitation has already transformed the city into a frozen maze with public transport grounded and schools closed and it is easily one of the worst winters the Far East has experienced in decades.

Surviving the Russian Snow Apocalypse

Daily routines have been completely upended as the Russian Snow Apocalypse reshapes the urban landscape. There are no cars visible in the street, only heaps of snow up to five meters deep. Emergency workers are working twenty four hours a day to clear major arteries, yet the side streets are inaccessible snarls of white canyons. The snow cover has formed surreal scenes whereby windows at the second story are at eye level with the walking surface and this necessitates complete re-evaluation of how residents travel in their own locales.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Crisis Deepens

As the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky crisis continues, the city has declared a state of emergency. There have been two cases of death caused by falling snow and ice off uncleared rooftops and this has put a stern warning to the officials. As the airport is struggling to keep things going, food is being low in some isolated districts because of the logistical nightmare. Nonetheless, the strength of the local people is still observed despite all these difficulties, as many people can help neighbors to dig out and use skis as the main means of personal transport.
