Let’s celebrate those who capture moments that inspire

This World Photography Day, let’s recognise the power of visual storytelling and celebrate the photographers who capture moments that inspire. Celebrated every year on August 19, the day is dedicated to the art and science of photography.

History:

Commemorating the invention of the daguerreotype, World Photography Day traces its origins to August 19, 1839, when the French Academy of Sciences revealed the first-ever photographic process to the world. It was one of the first methods to capture permanent images.

The ‘Daguerreotype’ was developed in 1837 by the Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. The French Academy of Sciences announced the process on January 9, 1839, with the French government later that year purchasing the patent for the invention.

While the promising process was one of the earliest methods of capturing permanent images on a light-sensitive surface, the first durable colour photograph was taken in 1861. It’s even speculated that the first digital photograph was invented in 1957.

Significance And Celebration:

The day encourages people to appreciate the power of photography in preserving memories and telling stories, while motivating photographers all around the world to experiment with different styles, techniques and compositions.

It is a day to discuss the evolution of photographic techniques, advancements in equipment and technical aspects of photography. Photographers celebrate the day by taking photos, sharing their work and participating in photography-related events.
