Heinrich Klaasen quits as Seattle Orcas Skipper after Coach Matthew Mott Sacking
Midway through the Major League Cricket 2025 season, the Seattle Orcas are set up for a major shift in their leadership as Heinrich Klaasen, the captain of the franchise is stepping down from his captaincy, reportedly to ‘focus on his batting’. The news comes after Matthew Mott, the head coach of the franchise was sacked by the management.
The decision came after continuous losses in the 2025 season where the team has yet to register their first win after playing five matches. Klaasen, known for his destructive batting, has stepped down from captaincy to focus more on his batting while the position will be taken over by Zimbabwe’s Sikander Raza.
Hemant Dua, the CEO of the Seattle Orcas said, “This is a moment of reflection and renewal for the Seattle Orcas. This has been a tough run for the team, and with it, some difficult decisions had to be made. We are grateful to Matthew for his commitment and professionalism during his time with us, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavours,” in a statement.
He also added that, “We respect Heinrich’s decision to step down voluntarily as captain to focus on his batting. This reflects his character and team-first mindset. Sikandar was our unanimous choice once we heard from Klassen about his decision. We believe these changes set the stage for a strong second half of the season”.
The change must have paid off as the Orcas have defeated MI New York after a hefty target of 238 put up for chase, thanks to the MI skipper Nicholas Pooran who was unapprehended, scoring 108 off of 60 balls. While the score looked intimidating, Orcas lineup including Kyle Mayers, Raza, Klaasen and Hetmeyer at 6 pushed through the hurdles for their first win.
