Global Art in 2026: How Immersive Exhibitions Are Pulling Fashion Lovers Into Museums
Ask a friend when they last went to a museum and many will shrug. Ask when they last went to a show that felt like a film, and you might get a very different answer. Global Art in 2026 is built around that second kind of visit. Immersive exhibitions surround you with projections, sound and staged rooms, and fashion has become their most popular subject.
Why Fashion Exhibitions Bring In People Who Never Visited Before
Most of us don’t know much about brushwork or art movements. We do know what we like to wear. That is why a coat or an evening dress can pull a nervous first-timer through the door faster than a famous painting.
This year there is plenty to choose from. The V&A in London is showing Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art until 8 November. MoMu in Antwerp is telling the story of the Antwerp Six, and that show runs until January 2027. In both, you don’t just see the finished garment. Sketches, fabric samples and archive film sit beside it, so you can follow the idea from a rough drawing to something a person actually wore. Honestly, that does more than any wall label could.
The setting helps as well. Dim lighting, music and moving images make the room feel alive, and nobody needs a degree to enjoy it. A student on a budget, a tourist with a free afternoon and a grandmother who loves tailoring can all walk in and feel included. Many museums are also thinking harder about access, with step-free routes, audio descriptions and quiet hours for visitors who find noise and crowds tiring.
The Argument Over Social Media and Immersive Art
There is a catch, and critics are quick to point it out. When a show is designed to look good online, the artwork can become a backdrop for selfies. Some say it turns culture into a photo stop, and they have a point.
Still, the crowds are not all there for the picture. Plenty of visitors say they stay longer because the room explains the work without making them feel foolish. The better exhibitions seem to understand this. They use technology to explain the designer’s thinking, then step back and let the clothes do the talking.
If you plan to go, book a timed ticket early, because popular shows fill up. Weekday mornings are usually calmer. Take your photo, then put the phone away and look closely at the stitching, the texture and how the light moves across the fabric. That is the part a camera never quite catches.
