Latest updates – Gaza on the Brink: Calls for permanent ceasefire intensifies

Nearly 22 months after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Southern Israel, the conflict continues to spiral into one of the most brutal humanitarian crises in recent history. The initial assault killed around 1,200 people.

The Israeli military’s retaliation, on the other hand, has killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza. The Palestinian territory’s 2.3 million people are enduring relentless airstrikes, ground operations and a blockade that has cut off access to basic supplies.

Food, electricity and medical supplies are depleting. Global organisations are fearing that Gaza is already on the brink of a total humanitarian collapse if a ceasefire is not reached soon. Many people have died trying to reach GHF-managed aid distribution centres.

Latest Israel-Gaza Updates: Let’s take a look

1. Rising number of patients

The Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis has reported that the emergency and outpatient departments are full of patients, many coming in the last 24 hours alone. The health system in Gaza is already strained and is nearing a complete collapse.

2. US House Speaker in Israel

US House Speaker Mike Johnson is currently in the Middle East. He visited an illegal settlement in the occupied West Bank on Monday during his private tour of Israel. His stay is going to be long and could last until August 10.

3. Journalists sign petition to be let inside Gaza

More than 100 reporters, photographers and more people in the industry recently signed a petition demanding full and unsupervised access to Gaza, arguing that transparency is really important to reporting the truth about the brutal crisis.

The scale of suffering in Gaza is attracting urgent appeals from global leaders, humanitarian groups and the UN. The risk of famine, disease outbreaks and irreversible infrastructure collapse looms large. Diplomacy is important.
