As the Israel-Hamas war rages on, a chartered plane carrying about 15 injured Gazan children, along with their families, has arrived in the UAE for treatment. The group were evacuated late on Friday when the Rafah Border Crossing with Egypt opened during a humanitarian pause.
The injured Palestinians are the first of 1,000 women and children to be evacuated to the Emirates under a milestone initiative from President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that will allow the injured in the enclave to be flown in for attention at UAE hospitals.
The first group crossed the Rafah border into Egypt’s Al Arish where several medical personnel from the Emirates assessed them. Meanwhile, the Emirati Red Crescent is building a field hospital near the crossing where those not fit to leave Al Arish can receive treatment.
Since unveiling its Gallant Knight 3 operation, the UAE has flown out scores of cargo planes carrying equipment and medical supplies for the field hospital. “We have made preparations for this mission for several weeks,” said Tarek Wahba from Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.
The facility will have 150 beds, with departments for general surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, gynecology, and anaesthesia and intensive care units. Specialist professionals were selected for the mission, particularly those with experience in working with trauma patients.
On Monday, Al-Ain media said the Emirates has sent “64 planes to Gaza relief, including 56 planes sent during the last 7 days, with an average of 8 planes per day.” The report noted a staggering 1,039 tons of aid had been collected and 24,000 volunteers have been helping.
The brutal Israel-Gaza crisis erupted on October 7 when Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israeli towns, killing at least 1,200 people. In retaliatory strikes, Israel has claimed at least 12,000 Palestinian lives, with a concerning number of fatalities involving children.
The UAE and its President have been diligently helping Gaza with humanitarian aid and supplies. All medical and health facilities in the Emirates remain prepared to receive the remaining Gazans, said Maha Barakat, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Health Affairs.
Furthermore, the Emirates’ “Tarahum – For Gaza” relief campaign has established centres to collect and mobilise humanitarian relief packages in partnership with humanitarian and charitable institutions, volunteer centres, the private sector, media and all segments of society.
