Ontario Cuts Starlink Contract, Bans U.S. Companies Amid Tariff Dispute

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced the cancellation of a $100 million contract with Starlink. They said the reason is the concerns over the incoming 25% tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The provincial government is also implementing a ban on American companies from securing provincial contracts in response to the escalating trade measures.

Ford called the move a necessary step to protect Ontario’s economy and businesses from rising costs due to the new tariffs. During a press conference, he said “We won’t stand by while unfair trade policies hurt Ontario workers and taxpayers.”

The cancellation shows a big shift in Ontario’s approach to foreign contracts with U.S.. Starlink owned by SpaceX, had secured the deal to expand rural broadband access across the province.

After this announcement, Ontario will look for alternative providers and there are chances that he will prioritize local and international partners which are not affected by U.S. trade policies.
