Elon Musk Now Controls How the US Government Pays Its Bills
The wealthiest person in the world, Elon Musk is in charge of President Donald Trump’s federal cost cutting initiatives through the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE). Critics are alarmed that Elon Musk’s assistants have taken over the US Treasury Department’s payments system which handles trillions of dollars worth of transactions annually.
“The corruption and waste is being rooted out in real-time,” Musk posted Sunday on X, the platform he owns.
The US government’s money flow is managed by the Treasury’s highly guarded payments system which includes $6 trillion a year for federal wages, Social Security, Medicare and other vital payments.
Musk was hailed by Trump on Sunday as “a big cost-cutter.”
Musk has given his team unparalleled access to the payment systems normally reserved for career staff by placing young surrogates working for DOGE into important government posts.
The employees who were apparently between the ages of 19 and 24 were also assigned to the federal Office of Personnel Management which is the human resources department for public employees. Last week, the agency sent out an email offering the majority of its employees the opportunity to leave the government immediately with around nine months pay.
Due of the potential systemic hazards to the economy, Democratic lawmakers have voiced serious worries about political operators having access to the money flow of the US government.
