Data released by PPL, the music licensing body, Ed Sheeran was the “most played” artist in the United Kingdom last year. Furthermore, the popular artist’s song Bad Habits was the most played song of the year.
This is the fourth time in last five years that Ed Sheeran has been named the United Kingdom’s most-played artist. This is calculated by plays on different media including radio, TV, pubs, clubs and shops.
Ed Sheeran’s continued success is “a testament to the quality of his output [and] the strength of UK music at a time when the global music landscape is more competitive than ever,” said PPL chief executive Peter Leatham.

If experts are to be believed, Bedford-born singer Tom Grennan could soon replace Sheeran. Second and third most played songs of 2021 were of the singer who was recently admitted in hospital after he was attacked in New York.

The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights was the fourth most played song of the year 2021, though it was released in November 2019. The song has sold three million copies in the UK alone and has also been recently named the “biggest hit of all time” on the US Billboard charts after overtaking Chubby Checker’s 1960 single The Twist.
