Chua Lam, the Hong Kong based Food Critic and Producer passed away at 83 – Here’s his Career, Legacy and Net Worth
Chua Lam, the renowned Food critic and movie producer from Hong Kong and popular among the Chinese speaking community passed away at the age of 83. The news of his death was announced through his social media account without any mention of cause of death.
Born in Singapore, the Hong Kong based critic passed away at the Hong Kong Sanitorium Hospital and his family and friends were by his side, a post revealed on his Weibo account. “In accordance with his wishes, in order not to disturb relatives and friends, there was no ceremony and his body was cremated”, it added.
Chua Lum was a movie producer who travelled around the world scouting locations for filming. A local newspaper insisted on him writing columns about his travels and that is when Lum took on the food as his topic of interest. Further his writing became a welcoming voice in the Chinese speaking culinary circle, boosting him as a food critic. “So I wrote a lot about food and restaurants, and eventually people saw me as a food critic,” Chua Lum said to the South China Morning Post in 2016.
He was considered one among the ‘four greatest talents’ that had Cantopop lyricist James Wong Jim and novelists Jin Yong and Ni Kuang align with Chua Lum. The food critic was the last of the four to live, creating a void and a remarkable legacy. HIs net worth is marked approximately around $477 Million from his production company, writing in newspapers, television appearances, novel royalties and other ventures.
Chua Lum is also known for his writing, producing massive films including some with the famous star Jackie Chan, television appearances in cooking competitions as consultant. He was also involved in the making of the 2012 documentary ‘A Bite of China’ that introduced its audience to the culinary diversity of China, Lum was a consultant in the project.
Chua Lum’s public appearances reduced drastically after an unfortunate incident at his home in 2023 when he fell and fractured his pelvic bone while rushing to help his wife who slipped and fell, tragically passing away later the same year.
