2023 Nobel Prize In Medicine Recognizes mRNA Vaccines Against COVID-19
“Through their groundbreaking findings, which have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times,” the Nobel Assembly said in its announcement on Monday.
Enabling The Development Of mRNA Vaccines Against COVID-19
Essentially, Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman have been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries that enabled the development of mRNA vaccines.
Kariko is a professor at Sagan’s University in Hungary and an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.
The biochemist was senior vice president and head of RNA protein replacement at BioNTech until last year but since then has been acting as an adviser to the company.
Weissman is a Roberts Family Professor in Vaccine Research and Director of the Penn Institute for RNA Innovations. He is a professor in vaccine research at the Perelman School.
Concise Insight Into Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
The prestigious award is given annually by the Nobel Assembly, recognising scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of medicine for the benefit of humankind.
113 Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine have been awarded since 1901. Frederick Banting is the youngest medicine laureate ever, receiving the award in 1923 for the discovery of insulin.
Meanwhile, Swedish geneticist Svante Paabo was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for notable discoveries in human evolution.
His groundbreaking work in extracting and analysing DNA from ancient bones provided key insights into our immune system, including our vulnerability to severe COVID-19.
Nobel Laureates To Receive Awards In Ceremonies In Oslo Or Stockholm
Nobel announcements continue with the physics prize on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The highly anticipated Nobel Peace Prize will be announced Friday.
Meanwhile, the economics award is set to be given on October 9. The prizes carry a staggering cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor. The figure was raised by 1 million kronor this year owing to the plunging value of the Swedish currency.
