World Sleep Day 2023: Lifestyle Changes that result in sleep disorders
The purpose of World Sleep Day is to increase public awareness of the value of sleep and the negative effects sleep disorders have on our health and well-being. Millions of people experience sleep disorders every year, which can significantly lower people’s quality of life. Changing one’s diet and way of life is one of the main causes of sleep disorders. Many people today lead sedentary lifestyles, consume unhealthy foods, and experience constant stress, all of which can have a negative impact on sleep patterns. Let’s acknowledge how our dietary and lifestyle choices affect our sleep patterns on this World Sleep Day and take action to improve our lives.
The five most typical dietary and lifestyle changes that result in sleep disorders were revealed to HT Lifestyle by Dr. Manoj Kutteri, Medical Director and CEO of Atmantan Wellness Centre.
1. Sleep and lifestyle are related: A lifestyle-related condition, lack of sleep is now affecting an increasing number of people as a result of lifestyle changes. It’s important to be aware of these dietary and lifestyle choices that may interfere with your ability to sleep.
2. Caffeine consumption: Drinking coffee in moderation during the day may not negatively impact your ability to sleep, but consuming more caffeine in the late afternoon or evening may disrupt your circadian rhythm. Caffeine is a stimulant that can increase alertness and has a long half-life in the blood. Caffeine must be metabolized in our bodies for about 9 to 10 hours, which can prevent us from falling asleep.
3. Sleep and exercise: Lack of exercise is one of the main causes of poor sleep. Regular exercise will help raise your body temperature and heart rate, which will encourage the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters like serotonin. Deep relaxation can result from this, which can also help to lower stress and anxiety. Regular exercisers report getting deeper sleep and falling asleep more quickly. But excessive exercise or exercise done late at night can interfere with sleep.
4. Poor eating habits: An excessively processed, refined, high-sugar, high-trans-fat diet, etc., can cause the body to become inflamed throughout, which can result in weight gain. This can also result in a number of lifestyle issues and have a negative impact on sleep, making it difficult to get to sleep, stay asleep, or wake up feeling rested. These bad eating habits also contribute to lifestyle diseases.
5. Poor sleep hygiene: Various lifestyle choices can also contribute to poor sleep. Blue screen use, a large meal before bed, excessive sugar consumption, drinking alcohol, etc. can all have a negative effect on how well you sleep.
