Winners and highlights from Oscars 2023. You don't wanna miss it!
The 95th Academy Awards are taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel hosting this year’s ceremony. He opened with a monologue that demonstrated the last 12 months in the movie industry.
A number of Hollywood A-listers are in attendance, having walked the champagne-coloured (and not the traditional red) carpet. Nevertheless, despite the famous carpet changing colour for Oscars 2023, the glamour on the show was still the same as ever.
Major Highlights:
Ke Huy Quan wins best supporting actor at the ceremony
Quan is among the early winners at this year’s Oscars. “I cannot believe it is happening to me,” the 51-year-old said while accepting best supporting actor for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The Vietnamese actor took an extended break from acting after gaining recognition as a child actor. But his role in the film catapulted him back into the spotlight.
Top Gun: Maverick wins for best sound
Also nominated were Elvis, Avatar: The Way of the Water, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Batman. The sequel to the original Top Gun grabbed the best award for achievement in sound for its exciting portrayal of the world of air warfare. The film was a hit, bringing in roughly $1.5 billion at the box office.
India creates history
In the country’s first nomination and first win in this category, the Indian film RRR grabbed the Oscar for best song with “Naatu Naatu”. The song beat a number of heavyweight competitors, including Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick.
Everything Everywhere All at Once takes home a couple more Oscars
Quan’s co-star Jamie Lee Curtis won best supporting actress at the ceremony, her first Oscar in her 45-year acting career. The film also clinched the prize for best original screenplay, among other nominees such as Tar, The Fabelmans, Triangle of Sadness, and The Banshees of Inisherin.
