An American pastor who was kidnapped in South Africa has been rescued safely by police after a dangerous shootout.
Josh Sullivan, a 34-year-old pastor from Tennessee, was taken by armed men while leading a church service on April 10 in the Eastern Cape Province. He had been working as a missionary there since 2018 with his wife and children.
Police found out that Josh was being held in a house in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha. When they reached the place, suspects inside a car started shooting at the officers and tried to escape. Police returned fire, and during the shootout, three suspects were killed.
Thankfully, Josh was found inside the car, completely unharmed. Authorities said he is in good condition.
Josh’s mentor, Pastor Tom Hatley from Maryville, Tennessee, confirmed the rescue on Facebook. He thanked everyone for their support and prayers.
Josh and his family had previously spent six months in South Africa during their Bible training. They returned in 2018 as full-time missionaries. Josh learned the local Xhosa language so he could better preach and connect with the community.
Authorities are still investigating the case. The rescue brings relief to many people both in South Africa and back home in the U.S.
