US Midterm Elections 2026: Rising Prices and a Tight Senate Map Put Congress Up for Grabs
Americans head to the polls on November 3 for the US Midterm Elections 2026, and the result will be felt well beyond US borders. Midterms fall halfway through a president’s term. This year, all 435 House seats and roughly a third of the Senate are on the ballot. Republicans hold 218 House seats and 53 Senate seats right now, which means the fight for Congress is real. Whoever wins will have a say over federal spending, trade deals and how America deals with the rest of the world.
Why Prices Are Driving the US Midterm Elections 2026
Ask almost any voter what worries them and the answer sounds familiar: bills. In a mid October AP-NORC poll, 85 percent of registered voters called the economy one of the most important issues. Around 79 percent said they disapprove of how President Trump is handling the cost of living, and his overall approval sits near 36 percent.
Fuel is making things harder. With the Iran conflict still unresolved, diesel has climbed above $6 a gallon in states like Iowa and Michigan, according to AAA figures reported by NPR. A few Republican Senate candidates have even asked for gas taxes to be suspended. If you live outside the US, this is worth watching, because American inflation and fuel trends often shape prices in other countries too.
The House Looks Easier to Call Than the Senate
Forecasters see a clearer path in the House. Cook Political Report projects Democrats picking up between 9 and 19 seats, which would give them a majority. Prediction markets in mid October put their chances near 90 percent.
The Senate is messier. Democrats need to flip four Republican-held seats, and they are competitive in Ohio, Alaska, Iowa and Texas, all places Trump won by double digits in 2024. An NPR/PBS News/Marist poll found 53 percent of registered voters would pick a Democrat for Congress, compared with 41 percent for a Republican. Polls are only a snapshot, though. Turnout on the day will settle the tight races.
