Understanding The ‘Financial Tsunami’ Big Apple Is Preparing For

Days after predicting the migrant crisis “will destroy New York City”, Mayor Eric Adams dropped another piece of warning on Sunday, stressing the influx of thousands of asylum seekers every month will bring a “financial tsunami”.

The dire warning comes as departments across the board are compelled to cut budgets to accommodate the new arrivals. Overtime for NYPD cops will be slashed – even as police struggle to gain control of crime that is still higher than before the pandemic.

The city’s four uniformed agencies – police, fire, sanitation and corrections – have been asked to come up with plans to cut their OT costs, according to Adams’ budget director, Jacques Jiha. NYC cannot manage 10,000 people a month with no end in sight, the mayor warned.

Multiple major US cities have been struggling with the same problem. Illegal border crossings substantially dropped after the Biden administration introduced new restrictions in May. But the figures are again rising, with families with children responsible for the spike this time.

NYC Has “Far Passed Its Breaking Point”

Adams has raised an alarm over every city department to likely experience budget cuts to address the anticipated $12 billion price tag of the migrant crisis. He said it was his job to be transparent with New Yorkers about the actual extent of the crisis they are facing.

Families with children now represent about half of arrests of people crossing the border from Mexico illegally, The Associated Press quoted a US official as saying. August was possibly the busiest month ever, recording more than 91,000 arrests.

NYC has welcomed some 110,000 migrants since spring 2022, with tens of thousands of them temporarily living in government shelters. “We cannot continue to do work to solve a national crisis that the state and federal governments have refused to take meaningful action on.”

Quoted by Fox News Digital, a spokesperson for Adams’ office said The Big Apple has far passed its breaking point, adding the best way to avoid heartbreaking outcomes is to expedite work authorisations and create a decompression strategy to spread people across the US.
