UAE’s Role in Advancing Peace: Multiple Russia-Ukraine Prisoner Exchanges

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a key facilitator in the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with several prisoner exchanges recently making the conflict a notch easier, showing its desire to promote peace throughout the world. Since 2025, the UAE has been having numerous exchanges, in which both parties can reclaim thousands of captives, which demonstrates its growing diplomatic strength. These, along with the fact that they demonstrate the degree of trust between Moscow and Kyiv, also highlight that the UAE is dedicated to reducing the humanitarian impact of the war, including the crisis of prisoners and refugees.

UAE-Mediated Prisoner Exchanges

In March 2025, the UAE was able to mediate 175 Ukrainian prisoners with 175 Russian prisoners, comprising 350 people. This was an all-time high in terms of captives being released under mediation efforts by the UAE. In its ongoing active participation in the dialogue and peace process, the UAE was another exchange in August 2025, between 84 captives per side. This most recent exchange now took the number of prisoners exchanged under UAE mediation to 4,349. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) thanked the two countries for cooperating, which showed great trust in the capability of the UAE to provide humanitarian and diplomatic solutions.

Commitment to Peace and Humanitarian Support

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE underlined that the sixteenth successful mediation proves the high-level relations the country has with Russia and Ukraine. Through effective maintenance of these exchanges, the UAE is not only promoting diplomatic resolutions to the issue but also engaging in humanitarian matters perpetrated by the conflict. The Ministry restated the commitment of the country to contributing to continuous efforts that could result in the peaceful disarmament of the war, such as alleviating the suffering of prisoners, refugees, and communities that were affected. Such initiatives emphasize the emerging popularity of the UAE as a nonpartisan and reliable surrogate in the international arena.
