The “most romantic” capital city in Europe is Lisbon

Based on the amount of romantic restaurants and hotels in the vicinity, Lisbon is the “most romantic capital” in Europe.

Catamaran Charter Croatia, a European-based yacht charter company, evaluated TripAdvisor data for each major city in Europe, especially the number of romantic restaurants and hotels per million residents in each city.

Lisbon topped the list with 588 romantic restaurants, 152 romantic hotels, and a population approaching 550 thousand. This offers the Portuguese capital the largest concentration of restaurants and hotels per million inhabitants.

Following Lisbon is the city-state of Monaco, which has 54 romantic restaurants and six romantic hotels for its small population of 40,000, for a total of 1,472 romantic restaurants and 164 hotels per million inhabitants.

Interestingly. Monaco, which is located on the French Riviera, has the second-smallest land area among European cities, whereas Lisbon ranks ninth.

Popularly known as the City of Love, the French capital Paris ranked third with 1,837 romantic restaurants and 542 romantic hotels for a population little over two million, or 648 restaurants and 252 hotels per million inhabitants.

San Marino and Rome rounded out the top five, while Andorra’s Andorra la Vella, the Netherlands’ Amsterdam, Greece’s Athens, the Czech Republic’s Prague, and Iceland’s Reykjavik occupy the remaining positions in the top ten.

Rome has the most romantic hotels, with 1,371 in the Top 10 and 650 of them rated four stars or above.

London, United Kingdom, which did not make the list, has the most romantic restaurants, whereas Paris has the most Michelin-starred restaurants with 88, including nine with three stars.

A spokeswoman for Catamaran Charter Croatia stated, “The fact that there are so many romantic restaurants and hotels in smaller cities demonstrates how many capital cities may benefit from becoming a romantic weekend destination. European nations flourish during celebrations, especially on Valentine’s Day, so it’s intriguing to discover which capital cities come out on top on the most romantic day of the year.”
