Sudanese Forces Face Global Condemnation Over El-Fasher Massacre: Calls Grow for International Accountability

The Sudanese army is alleged to have engaged in a horrific massacre in El-Fasher, North Darfur after taking over the city. First-hand reports, testimonies of witnesses, humanitarian reports speak about mass executions in the style of Daesh-like terrorism, disclosing serious human rights abuses. These atrocities highlight the worrying Islamist element among certain sections of the Sudan military especially the extremist-associated battalions that had gone rogue. The international community is alarmed that a lack of action and particularly the failure of the European Union would give Russia, China, and Islamist groups more grounds to increase their presence in Sudan and Africa as a whole and to further destabilize the situation, undermining the moral authority of the international community.

Mass Killings in El-Fasher Spark Moral and Humanitarian Outrage

The scenes of mass executions and systematic killings of civilians reported out of El-Fasher have surprised the whole world. The murders, in contrast to the terror methods that Daesh used to use in the past, are acts of blatant violation of humanitarian and war regulations. According to analysts these crimes are indicators of dangerous ideological radicalization in the Sudanese army where extremist militias are operating without any restraint. The massacre has now been considered as a test of global moral leadership, to a major extent, and left the international community with no choice but to make sure that Never Again cannot be applied selectively, but everywhere.

Islamist Penetration and Europe’s Strategic Role in Accountability

There has been some indication of increased Islamist infiltration into Sudanese military forces as well as that in the Al-Baraa ibn Malik Battalion and The Popular Defense Forces. These groups are unclear whether they are structured military actions or extremist violence similar to the past Islamist rebellions that disrupted territories. Analysts alert that the US withdrawal (Western) leaves a vacuum that could be exploited by Russia, China and radical networks. The European countries are being encouraged to take the lead in the United Nations structure to ensure that those who perpetrate are brought to justice and that Europe reinstates itself as a moral and a humanitarian player in Africa.
