Post-War Gaza: UAE Pushes for Stability and Reconstruction

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is reportedly discussing with America and Israel how to arrange a temporary rule of Gaza after the war. This plan of internationalizing the management of Gaza is designed to deal with its governance, security, and rebuilding until such a time that a reformed Palestinian Authority (PA) can effectively assume responsibilities. However, the talks are still talkative; nevertheless, the UAE has taken the lead to press on the PA reform and map out the agenda for the Palestinian state.

Regional Stability and Peace

The UAE got involved because it supports the objectives of peace and stability within the Middle Eastern region. As one of the few Arab countries with recognition of Israel, the UAE is well placed to facilitate. Abu Dhabi has called for a refounding of the Palestinian Authority with the capacity to govern Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

Nevertheless, Israel has some doubts about this idea because of the PA’s financial mismanagement and education system, which, according to Israel, incites people against the state. Nevertheless, all participants in the conflict recognize the necessity of depriving Gaza of Hamas, which they regard as a menacing actor in the Middle East.

Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction

Gaza has been severely devastated and presently millions of people are struggling for basic humanitarian assistance. Several years and billions of dollars are estimated to be necessary to reconstruct the physical infrastructure and institutional frameworks of the region. The government of UAE has called for urgent humanitarian assistance to meet the sparse needs of Shelter, Water, and Primary Healthcare.

Official sources from the Emirati side have also called for the deployment of private military contractors to maintain the peace in Gaza. Nevertheless, such an idea has raised concerns with reference to possible human rights abuses, on the grounds that such measures could offer the much-needed stability to facilitate reconstruction.

Global Cooperation for a Better Future

It is for this reason that the nature of the talks emphasizes the value of cooperation on the international level. The UAE, together with Egypt, Qatar, and the USA, is striving for a cease of fire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The authorities of Washington are searching for a solution to the problems concerning the finance, security, and economy of Gaza.

The UAE has been keen on the point that any plan after the war requires a change in the Palestinian Authority, for example, through leadership changes. The new governance approach has also been compared with the preceding one by suggesting examples such as Former PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who was known for his transparent and reformative leadership style.

A Vision for Development

The UAE wants a reformed Palestinian Authority able to take over the governance and development of Gaza. This includes creating employment opportunities and rebuilding and developing infrastructure to turn Gaza from an area of warfare into an area of business. However, to attain this vision it requires the political will and International support to overcome certain political barriers.

Despite differing views, the UAE, the U.S., and Israel share a common goal a stable and peaceful Gaza. The consequences of these talks might define the future of the region and promote the idea of sustainable peace and development.
