Parenting Tips: Four things to do when a child disagrees with your decision
As a parent, it’s normal to come across situations when a kid refuses to listen. They may be throwing tantrums to make things go their way. Instead of losing your temper, it’s better to take a step back and analyse circumstances from their perspective.
Parents must not allow impatience and stress to get the better of them. According to psychologist Jazmine McCoy, we should try to understand the little ones and set healthy boundaries so the kids understand and avoid the same behaviour from repeating.
It’s immensely essential for parents, particularly the new ones, to understand that it’s okay if the child disagrees with your decision. Every relationship can have its own disagreements, even the one between a parent and a child. In such cases, both parties must try to find common ground.
It’s never good to take decisions while one’s angry. Instead of just bursting into flames, you can as a parent take a step back, pause for a moment, calm yourself down and then take an informed decision after having a detailed discussion with your kid.
Children don’t always prefer to listen. There can often be situations when they refuse to follow your instructions. Instead of trying to have the upper hand in the relationship, you can put a brief pause on all the push and try to understand things from your child’s perspective.
It’s important to proceed with care and empathy while trying to make your child understand the importance of healthy boundaries and routines. It’s normal for a child to face difficulties with these kinds of stuff. You must maintain honesty and consistency about it.
