oulu trencin european capitals culture 2026 launch
Finland’s Oulu and Slovakia’s Trenčín have kicked off their year as European Capitals of Culture 2026, with Oulu’s grand opening festival January 16-18 transforming the city center into a winter wonderland of art, music, theatre, and exhibitions. Trenczin adheres to the February 13-15 with the title Awakening Curiosity, where he connects past-future, city-nature. The “Cultural Climate Change” program of Oulu consists of 500 events at the site of Brave Hinterland, Cool Contrasts, Wild City, Climate Clock installations. Both of the cities, named in 2022, are characterized by regenerating urban areas, enhancing tourism, and promoting EU cohesion through culture. Recently, there was a change of hands between Chemnitz-Nova Gorica duo of 2025.
The three-day kickoff in Oulu brings on board 39 municipalities in events that are inclusive in terms of events, bringing out the best of innovation in the north and art of the environment.
Trenczin has developed curiosity using the collaborative programs which bridge the gap between everyday life and heritage.
As European Capitals of Culture 2026, they drive regeneration, international ties, and cultural dialogue.
