Kit Harington Joins Harry Potter Season 2 as Gilderoy Lockhart, Replacing Nicholas Hoult

Here’s the fun part: Harington isn’t coming into this cold. He already voiced Lockhart for the 2025 full-cast audiobook of Chamber of Secrets, so he’s spent real time inside this character’s head already which probably made him an easy yes for HBO once Hoult stepped back. And honestly, the casting is a bit of a delight precisely because it’s such a departure. Jon Snow was broody, dutiful, allergic to self-promotion. Lockhart is the opposite of all that vain, flashy, more in love with his own reputation than with actual competence. Watching Harington lean into that kind of preening, self-important energy could be genuinely fun, especially for anyone who only knows him as the guy who “knew nothing.” For context, Kenneth Branagh played the role in the original 2002 film, so Harington has a pretty memorable predecessor to riff off of.

This recasting probably won’t shift the overall shape of Season 2, which is still expected to adapt Chamber of Secrets. But it does add a bit of buzz to a project that’s already generating plenty of attention. HBO’s new series is planning to give the books more breathing room than the movies did, so a character like Lockhart often played mostly for laughs in the films could actually get some real development this time around.
