Jay-Z Confirmed for Super Bowl 2027 Halftime Show: What Fans Should Know
For years, Jay-Z has been the man behind the curtain, deciding who gets the Super Bowl spotlight. Now he’s stepping into it himself. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Monday night that the rapper will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show. It takes place Sunday, Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. It will be his first Super Bowl halftime performance.
How We Got Here
The news didn’t come out of nowhere. On Oct. 20, Puck reported that Jay-Z had selected himself for the slot, though the league hadn’t confirmed it at the time. The announcement followed his two October shows at SoFi, part of a tour marking 30 years of Reasonable Doubt.
There’s a little irony here, too. At the 2019 press conference announcing Roc Nation’s NFL deal, he told Commissioner Roger Goodell they could “end this conversation now” if it was about him performing. Goodell has said his only request was that Jay-Z take the stage “whenever the moment felt right to him.”
Who’s Running the Show
Roc Nation has produced the halftime show since 2019. It will executive produce again, with Hamish Hamilton directing.
What to Expect
Nobody has named guest performers or a set list yet. The official announcement left both out. The guessing game has already started, though. At SoFi, his daughter Blue Ivy played piano on two songs, and Scarface, John Legend and DJ Khaled joined him on opening night. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Eminem and Nas appeared earlier at Yankee Stadium. Treat any guest list you see online as rumor until it’s confirmed.
Why It Matters
The stakes are high. Bad Bunny’s February show reportedly drew 135 million viewers, the most-watched halftime show ever. Any follow-up will be measured against that number. A hip-hop mogul with three decades of hits gives the NFL a strong shot at another huge audience. For fans, it’s a rare career-spanning moment from someone who spent years helping everyone else shine.
There’s also the optics. Picking yourself for a job you help oversee is going to get people talking. That means the show will face extra scrutiny, and a great performance is the best answer to the jokes.
