iga swiatek asks for more thoughtfulness from internet users
Iga Swiatek – currently ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association – has called for less hate and more thoughtfulness from netizens after she received criticism even as she continues to push through the draw at the Cincinnati 2023.
The Polish professional tennis player called for the “ridiculous” internet hate to stop, raising concerns over the worryingly high amount of hate and criticism she and her team received after losing a set in the event.
She called on netizens to also focus on the positive side of what they are doing. Merely after losing a set in her third-round match on Thursday, Swiatek said her team received critical messages. The player recovered to comprehensively defeat Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The 22-year-old stressed the world would possibly be a better place if people didn’t judge each other so quickly. After the tense match on Thursday, the French Open winner triumphed in a marquee battle between the two most recent grand slam champions on Friday.
Swiatek defeated Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova to reach the semi-finals here for the first time. While the Polish player may not have quite hit the heights of 2022’s 37-match winning streak, her consistency this year is still immensely noteworthy.
Another stressful match awaits Swiatek as she faces Coco Gauff from the US for a spot in the high-profile finals. Meanwhile, Spanish professional Carlos Alcaraz has still yet to find his best form in Cincinnati, but the top seed recovered from a set down to move into the semi-finals.
