Houthi Strike on Aden Palace and Saudi Energy Sites: Yemen War Widens
On October 15, missiles landed on the presidential complex in Aden, and the Houthi strike on Aden palace and Saudi energy sites has become the clearest sign yet that the Yemen war widens beyond its own borders. Saudi Arabia says its airports and oil sites have been under repeated fire for weeks. Here is a plain look at what happened and why people far away should care.
The Strike on the Aden Palace
Al-Maashiq palace is where Yemen‘s internationally recognised government works. On Thursday, missiles struck the Aden palace compound. Yemen’s health minister said five people were killed and 16 wounded, although early reports mentioned only two guards, so the numbers changed as details came in.
The Houthis said they were aiming at a Saudi military operations headquarters in the city. It was the first attack on the palace in this round of fighting. Last month, Houthi forces briefly seized the palace during a battle for Aden before pulling out. Against that background, the latest strike looks like a political message as much as a military move, a reminder that even the seat of government is within reach.
Pressure on Saudi Energy Sites and Airports
The other half of the story is happening inside the kingdom. In early October, the Houthis claimed a missile and drone attack on an Aramco facility near Riyadh. The Saudi-led coalition called the claim misleading, yet satellite images and videos showed a large smoke plume and burning storage tanks. Market reports linked the news to Brent crude rising above $100 a barrel. Damage to Saudi energy infrastructure matters worldwide, because many countries depend on the oil the kingdom exports.
Airports have also been hit. The coalition says 19 people were killed and 364 injured in attacks on Saudi airports, including King Khalid International in Riyadh and Abha. Operations at the Riyadh airport were suspended after further strikes. The Houthis have also taken Yemen’s Red Sea coast, which sits beside a key shipping lane and an important Saudi export route.
Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have jointly demanded an immediate halt to the attacks, while aid agencies warn that life for ordinary Yemenis is getting harder by the week.
