Global Leaders Hail Opening of Adre Border Crossing to Address Sudan’s Crisis

In a significant move to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, a coalition of global powers, including the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Switzerland, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the African Union, and the United Nations, have issued a joint statement welcoming the decision by the Sudanese Armed Forces to open the Adre border crossing.

The opening of the Adre border crossing located along the Sudan-Chad border comes at a time when Sudan is grappling with severe food insecurity, ongoing conflict, and a deteriorating humanitarian situation. The decision by the SAF to open this critical access point is seen as a lifeline for millions of Sudanese people, particularly those in Darfur, who have been cut off from essential supplies for months.

In their joint statement, the delegations in Geneva expressed their optimism about the impact of this decision, noting that it could save countless lives. “The delegations in Geneva welcome the decision by the SAF to open the Adre border crossing – a critical step for saving lives and preventing the spread of famine. We look forward to seeing the first convoys cross in the coming days,” the statement read.

Urgent Call for Safe Humanitarian Access

However, the joint statement also highlighted the ongoing challenges in delivering aid to those who need it most. The coalition called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), another key player in the Sudanese conflict, to ensure that humanitarian groups entering through the Adre border are provided with safety, unfettered access, and operational independence from armed and political actors. This appeal underscores the urgent need for all parties to the conflict to prioritize humanitarian efforts above their own agendas.

“We call on the RSF to take immediate steps to ensure that the aid groups entering through the Adre border are provided safety, unfettered humanitarian access, and operational independence from armed and political actors,” the statement continued.

The international community’s commitment to addressing the crisis in Sudan is clear. The expansion of humanitarian assistance and the protection of civilians are top priorities for the countries and organizations involved in these discussions in Switzerland. The joint statement also reiterated that facilitating humanitarian access and ensuring civilian protection are in line with the parties’ commitments under the Jeddah declarations and their obligations under international humanitarian law.

“We all must take immediate steps to move humanitarian assistance into Darfur and across Sudan with safe and unhindered passage to the people in need, regardless of which party controls territory. The facilitation of humanitarian access and civilian protection is consistent with the parties’ commitments under the Jeddah declarations and obligations under international humanitarian law,” the statement concluded.

As the first convoys prepare to cross the Adre border in the coming days, the international community remains vigilant and committed to ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most. The united efforts of these global powers reflect a shared understanding that the humanitarian needs in Sudan must be met urgently and without obstruction.

The decision to open the Adre border crossing is a positive step, but it is only the beginning of a long journey toward peace, stability, and recovery for Sudan.
