China Conducts Major Military Drills Near Taiwan

China performed large-scale military exercises near Taiwan, which it described as a ‘serious warning’ against the island’s independence. The exercises followed Taiwan’s failure to accept itself as part of China. Taiwan’s defense ministry also criticized the drills as provocative and declared its preparedness to counter them. This has helped create tensions in the area or region in question.

Brisk Chinese Military Exercises Increases Tensions

China said it was deploying naval, air, and missile forces near Taiwan after its defense ministry declared that it had alerted its maritime fleet, army air force, and missile forces for drill. These included 25 PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels while 16 aircraft came over the median line into Taiwan’s ADIZ.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said it has been closely watching the developments and resorted to action accordingly. The ROC Armed Forces regarded these as irrational and provocative actions and promised to counter-deploy the right force to protect ROC sovereignty.

Chinese drills were carried out shortly after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Beijing against responding to a speech by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te during the celebrations to mark Taiwan’s National Day. This latest development is an addition to the increasing conflict between the two extreme factions of China and Taiwan.

Taiwan is one of the few East Asian countries that was once a colony of Imperial Japan; it split with mainland China in 1949 after a civil war. China claims that the annexation of Taiwan is a historical certainty while Taiwan’s ruling party the Democratic Progressive Party does not recognize the authority of Beijing’s demands for unification.
