China calls on Europe to support its proposal for a cease-fire in Ukraine war

The People’s Republic of China urged Europe to support the peace proposal plan to stop the Russia-Ukraine war and provide a political settlement of the crisis.

Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, called on Europe to play a role in supporting peace talks to end the war in Ukraine.

Wang called Emmanuel Bonne, diplomatic advisor to the President of France, on Thursday. Wang said, “China looks forward to France and other European countries to also playing their due role.”

According to Bloomberg, Wang called for resuming peace talks. According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, “A cease-fire, stopping the war, resuming peace talks and a political settlement of the crisis should become the strategic consensus between China and Europe.”

The call came after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to Russia concluded on Wednesday. During his trip to Moscow, Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. They called each other “dear friends.” During the meeting, Putin hailed Beijing’s proposals for ending the war in Ukraine.

The United States warned that Beijing’s peace plan would freeze the Kremlin’s territorial gains. The US further alleged that the Chinese initiative was biased toward Russia. Estonia’s Ministry of Defense called the proposal “extremely unfair” for Ukraine. Estonia’s Ministry of Defense said that the plan doesn’t respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Kusti Salm, the Permanent Secretary of the Estonian Ministry of Defense, said that China’s plan was not fair to Ukraine’s people. Recently, Estonia’s Ministry of Defense said that it would send 1 million 155-mm artillery rounds to Ukraine.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said that he would travel to China to speak to Xi about the proposal. French President Emmanuel Macron said he would visit China in April to help in ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.
