World Mental Health Day: Ten Tips To Manage Your Emotional Well-being

This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is ‘Mental Health Is A Universal Human Right’, emphasising the need to take concrete actions to promote emotional well-being worldwide.

The overall objective of the Day marked each year on October 10 is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health.

The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for all.

Ten Tips To Safeguard Your Mental Health

  1. Stay Active
Even a short walk in the park, a quick workout or a dance session can have a significant impact. Regular exercise is a powerful mood booster as it releases endorphins.
  2. Prioritise Self-Care
Just as you diligently manage your physical health, prioritise your emotional well-being as well. Dedicate time to activities that bring you relaxation and joy.
  3. Get Enough Sleep
Nothing is as good as a good night sleep. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a calming bedtime routine as such practices are fundamental for mental health.
  4. Eat Healthy
The food you consume is known to directly influence your mental well-being. Opt for a balanced diet and ensure you stay hydrated. Steer clear of alcohol, smoking and drugs.
  5. Practice Mindfulness
Deep breathing exercises and mindfulness meditation can help you stay grounded and reduce stress, allowing you to tackle life’s challenges with ease.
  6. Don’t Hesitate To Express
In short, stay connected. Share your experiences openly as it’s believed meaningful relationships with friends and family provide essential social support.
  7. Limit Screen Time
Set boundaries and take digital detox breaks as excessive screen time is known to boost stress and anxiety. Disconnect from the virtual world, especially social media, every once in a while.
  8. Drop Unrealistic Goals
Breakdown your goals into scalable tasks. Avoid overwhelming yourself with unrealistic expectations. And don’t forget to celebrate small victories.
  9. Manage Stress
Identify the stressors and develop effective coping mechanisms. This may involve relaxation techniques, time management, practicing gratitude or listening to soothing music.
  10. Take Professional Help
At last but not the least, if you find yourself struggling to manage your emotional well-being, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional. Therapy and counselling can offer guidance.
