Wilmer-Hutchins High School Shooting Leaves Students Injured

At least four students were hurt in a shooting on Tuesday afternoon at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas.

The incident happened around 1:25 p.m. Police say a 17-year-old was shot in the leg. Two other students were also shot, and one more student was grazed by a bullet. The injured students are between 15 and 18 years old.

One student has serious injuries, but all the others are expected to recover.

Police are still looking for the person who did the shooting. They said the suspect has been identified, but no arrest has been made yet. The shooter got into the school because someone opened a door for them, according to Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins.

An officer who was already at the school responded quickly, within two minutes, and more police arrived soon after. The school was put on lockdown and later marked “secure” by the district.

Parents were asked to pick up their children at Eagles Stadium next to the school. All students were safely reunited with their families by the evening.

The school will stay closed for the rest of the week. More police will also be sent to other schools in the area to make sure students stay safe.

Wilmer-Hutchins High School already had safety measures in place like metal detectors and clear backpacks after a shooting happened there last year.

The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, said he is offering help to the school district. He also said Texas has spent over $3 billion on school safety and plans to add more funds.

Counselors are available at the school to help students and staff during this difficult time.
