What Is Justice For Jaahnavi Kandula Against Insensitive Seattle Cops?

Who Was Jaahnavi Kandula?

Jaahnavi Kandula was a 23-year-old graduate student from Northeastern University. She came to the U.S. from Bengaluru, India, as part of a student exchange program in 2021.

Jaahnavi was pursuing a master’s degree in South Lake Union, Seattle. She was due to graduate in December and had a promising future ahead.

Who Killed Jahnavi Kandula? Where Was Jaahnavi Kandula Killed?

On January 23, tragedy struck when Jaahnavi Kandula was killed in a horrifying accident. She was hit by a patrol car driven by a police officer named Kevin Dave in Seattle.

The circumstances were particularly alarming because the officer was driving at an excessively high speed of 74 mph (119 kmph) on his way to respond to an overdose report.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street, and the impact was so severe that Jaahnavi’s body was thrown more than 100 feet (30 meters) away. She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Another Cop Joked & Laughed On Her Death

What’s even more disturbing is the outrage that erupted after the Seattle Police Department released footage from another officer’s body camera.

This officer, Daniel Auderer, was caught on camera making insensitive and callous remarks about Jaahnavi’s death.

He was heard joking and laughing about the tragic incident, saying things like, “she is dead” and “she had limited value.” This shocking behavior sparked worldwide widespread condemnation.

His exact words were, “Yeah, just write a check of $11,000. She was 26 anyway…She had limited value.”

A Global Outrage

There is a global outrage against the Seattle cops Kevin Dave and Daniel Auderer, who killed and laughed at the tragic murder of Jaahnavi Kandula.

The minor communities as well as other groups are protesting marches against this case and demanding justice. India has strictly condemned the case demanding a thorough investigation.

The news has been spreaded in several countries and condemning the US police forces for their inhuman behavior.

Jaahnavi Kandula’s family has been devastated by the loss of their beloved daughter. They described her as a brilliant student with a radiant smile and a warm personality. Her untimely and tragic accident has left an irreplaceable void in their lives.

Protests, Marches & Rallies

The Seattle Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (SAARPR) organized a rally near the site of the collision to demand justice for Jaahnavi Kandula.

They expressed their dissatisfaction with the Seattle Police Department’s response, calling it “damage control.”

They said that the officers involved need to be held accountable for their actions, and the situation must be thoroughly investigated.

What Is Justice For Jaahnavi Kandula?

The tragic death of Jaahnavi Kandula is a heartbreaking reminder of the deep-rooted issues that persist in American society.

A young Indian student who came to the United States with dreams and aspirations lost her life in a horrifying accident.

The irresponsibility displayed by the police officer, Kevin Dave, driving at an alarming speed, is unforgivable.

The insensitive comments made by another officer, Daniel Auderer, in the aftermath of this tragedy, is that such a behavior has no place in law enforcement or anywhere else.

We can’t ignore the challenges faced by minority communities, including Indian-Americans, who often bear the hit of racial insensitivity and discrimination.

It’s high time we demand a fair and just society for all, where every life is valued, and where such incidents are met with swift and thorough investigations.

Jaahnavi’s death should not be in vain; it should be a major reminder for change. We must strive for a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background.
