US Confirms Death of ISIS No. 2 Abu Khadijah in Iraq Airstrike

In a major counterterrorism operation the United States in coordination with Iraqi security forces, has confirmed the killing of Abu Khadijah, the second-in-command of the Islamic State (ISIS). The airstrike took place on March 13 in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province targeting one of the most senior figures within the terror group. Another ISIS member was also killed in the strike.

Abu Khadijah was in charge of planning ISIS attacks around the world, handling the group’s money, and managing its supply chain. Despite ISIS losing most of its territory US officials say he played a key role in keeping the group active.

Following the strike US Central Command (CENTCOM) and Iraqi forces arrived at the scene, confirming Abu Khadijah’s identity through DNA testing. Reports indicate that both men killed in the strike were wearing suicide vests and carrying weapons at the time of their deaths.

US General Michael Erik Kurilla described Abu Khadijah as one of the most dangerous ISIS leaders stating that US forces will continue targeting those who pose a threat to the region and beyond. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani also praised the operation, calling it a major victory against terrorism.

Though ISIS was defeated in Iraq in 2017 its fighters remain active in remote areas. The US still has 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq to support counterterrorism efforts and assist local forces in preventing a resurgence of the group.
