UAE leads the way with in protecting human rights and freedoms

Under the guidance of the wise leadership, the UAE has placed the provision of human rights at the top priority. Last year, the UAE established the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) with the aim of protecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all community members. The institution endeavours to strengthen UAE’s efforts to promoting and safeguarding the rights of all people, including women, workers, children, senior citizens and people of determination among other sections of society.

Massive diversity of nationalities living in peace

The UAE is home to more than 200 nationalities who are living in the country in harmony with their civil liberties affirmed by the law. Furthermore, the UAE Constitution outlines the rights and freedoms of all people, irrespective of their nationality, religion, race, and social position.

The Constitution protects civil liberties such as freedom to practice religious beliefs, peaceful assembly and association and freedom of speech and expression. The UAE law also labels discrimination as a crime, encouraging people to report any form of discrimination to the authorities for required action.

Strong women’s rights

Women in the UAE have access to key benefits, including education, health, employment and social welfare as they enjoy the same constitutional rights as men. There is a long list of Emirati women who are leading the country at the top government positions. In recent years, women have occupied more than 60 percent of jobs in the public sector, one of the highest globally.

The UAE emerged as a global leader in empowering women and protecting their rights as it ranked on the 18th position globally and first regionally in the 2020 Gender Inequality Index (GII) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Assuring workers’ rights:

With hundreds of immigrant workers moving to the UAE in search of employment on a daily basis, the country ensures to treat them with respect and provide them access to basic rights. Workers are consistently encouraged to report instances of mistreatment in terms of confiscation of passports and charging recruitment fees which are prohibited in the UAE by law.

No place for intolerance

The UAE Ministry for Tolerance and Coexistence has set up several centres to tackle extremism and promote tolerance and co-existence in the country. Furthermore, the UAE law criminalises any actions that may hurt religious sentiments and/or trigger hatred through any form of communication, including speech, written text or online media.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed – a leader in human rights

Following the directives of the Founding Fathers and the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the appointment of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as UAE President will further reinforce the provision of human rights and fundamental freedoms to people of all nationalities in the country.

As a leader in human rights, Sheikh Mohamed has led numerous initiatives to provide basic rights and freedoms to the community. Under his leadership, the UAE will continue to create effective programmes to guarantee the rights of all people as equal.
