UAE Strengthens Global Mediator Role With 23rd Russia-Ukraine Prisoner Exchange

The United Arab Emirates has reinforced its role as a trusted global mediator by successfully arranging the 23rd prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine since the beginning of the war. The United Arab Emirates’ efforts to become a trusted global mediator have been further strengthened after successfully arranging the 23rd prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine since the war broke out. Both parties released 205 POWs in the most recent prisoner swap, another significant step in the war’s humanitarian progress.

The UAE has now helped release a total of 7,101 prisoners thanks to this latest effort, as part of its mediation efforts between the two nations. The recognition underscores the UAE’s rise in the ranks of world diplomacy and its efforts to become an indispensable link between the East and the West.

The second swap was part of a broader prisoner exchange deal announced last week by US President Donald Trump that calls for 1,000-for-1,000 prisoners.

UAE’s Mediation Efforts Reach New Milestone

The latest deal is the 23rd successful mediation between Russia and Ukraine that the UAE has facilitated in the past. The Gulf country has increasingly been playing a humanitarian diplomacy role alongside good coordination with both parties, although tension prevails.

During the prisoner exchange, the UAE was providing humanitarian assistance, the Russian Defence Ministry confirmed. The released Russian servicemen were taken to Belarus, where psychological and medical assistance is provided to them, after which they are transferred to Russia for treatment and rehabilitation.

The UAE’s measured diplomacy has enabled it to become one of the few nations in the world to be able to broker direct humanitarian coordination between the two capitals, between Moscow and Kyiv, officials and analysts say.

Zelenskyy Calls Exchange First Step in Larger Swap

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the latest deal was the initial part of a wider prisoner swap deal.

205 Ukrainians are home. The majority of them had been captured by the Russian armed forces since 2022, Zelenskyy said on Telegram, sharing photos of Ukrainian servicemen smiling, placing their hands on their hearts and holding Ukrainian flags.

Ukrainian authorities said that those released were privates, sergeants and officers who were imprisoned for years since the conflict intensified in 2022.

The prisoner swap is the latest in two previous prisoner exchanges in April. In the Orthodox Easter, 175 servicemen were exchanged with each other and in another exchange on April 24, 193 prisoners were exchanged as well.

UAE Reinforces Image as Trusted Global Mediator

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its dedication to promoting efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict and alleviate its humanitarian impact.

As such, the ministry focused on the importance of diplomacy and dialogue as key instruments through which tensions can be alleviated and help provided to those who have been affected. With the UAE’s diplomatic involvement, it has been boosted with regard to presenting itself as an international mediator that favours diplomatic approaches and humanitarian cooperation.

It has been encouraged by the Diplomatic Service in a new approach to foreign policy, which, according to much of the world, will make it act as a bridge between rival powers in geopolitics.

Humanitarian Diplomacy Gains International Attention

The UAE has been successful in holding prisoner exchanges and has received a great deal of media attention for its role as a neutral and effective mediator.

In 23 mediation attempts, the UAE has been able to hold talks between conflicting parties and to help free 7,101 prisoners in one of the world’s most intense geopolitical conflicts.

The UAE will likely play a significant role in the future in providing a diplomatic platform for humanitarian efforts and negotiations in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
