Trump’s Controversial Question: Is Kamala Harris Black or Indian?

In a meeting with Black journalists, the would-be president again, Donald Trump, said some confusing things about Kamala Harris. Harris is currently the Vice President of the United States.

He suggested that she used to talk more about being Indian and that just recently, she started saying that she’s Black. He said, “Is she Indian or is she Black?” The people listening got mixed up and angry.

Kamala Harris has always said she is both Black and Indian. Her mother was from India; her father, was from Jamaica. In America, many people have parents of different backgrounds. Harris has never hidden her mixed heritage, both in public life and in her campaign.

Trump’s words made many people cringe. It’s generally considered impolite to ask a person about their race this way. Many Americans, like Harris, have complicated family histories and therefore identify with more than one racial or ethnic group.

Harris Responds

Speaking to a crowd later, Harris said that the words reminded her of how Trump acted while he was president. She said that Americans deserved better than this kind of rhetoric.

Birth Certificate Discussion Online

Some have been posting on social media what they claim to be Kamala Harris’ birth certificate. Official documents are private, however, and their discussion or sharing, without permission, could end up being very misleading.

Facts and sources of information will always serve as the best way to learn about public figures. Kamala Harris has spoken and talked about her background in various instances openly; this way of understanding who she is is best.

How candidates talk about race and identity will be key for many voters as the next presidential election gets closer. It is a reminder that these topics are still sensitive and significant in American politics.
